Poll Results: If and when the NHL returns to Winnipeg, what name should the team be given?

  • Winnipeg Jets 82.2 % (176)
  • Manitoba Moose 6.1 % (13)
  • Other (leave suggestion in Comments) 11.7 % (25)

Total Votes: 214

23 votes were made in the lame "Election" ballot, with the results being 17 for Winnipeg Jets, 3 for Manitoba Moose, and 3 for Other... Good news, I found a "Polls" module for the updated site! Yay! :)

Something NEW. Respect the legacy of the Winnipeg Jets, but, remember that they were a very poor-run & poor-playing hockey club. And remember that an actual "Jet" has little significance in Winnipeg and Manitoba.

"Manitoba Moose" just sounds so minor-leagish.

A new name. A new arena. A new NHL. A new identity. A new attitude. A new ownership group. New, new, new.

The "Winnipeg WhiteOut", for example, would be a good choice. Of course, "WhiteOut" would reference our blizzards & frigid winter temperatures here in Winnipeg and of course the playoff tradition of the Jets.

When Minnesota got an NHL franchise back, they named them the "Wild". This of course signifies the rugged Minnesota Wilderness and they honoured the North Stars by placing the "North Star" as the eye of the bear in their logo.

"Poor run,, poor played" R U insane,, if not for the oilers in the 80's the Jets would have one or 2 cups. getting knocked out of the playofs in the first round by the best team on the planet affect your revenues.

If "Jets" is unavailable...

Without a doubt, if the team is still able, legally, to be called the "Jets", this would certainly be preferred. However, if the name "Jets" is unavailable (last I heard, Barry Shenkarow still had the rights), I suggest the name, the "Winnipeg Falcons", in honour of the first Olympic gold medal winning hockey team in 1920 ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winnipeg_Falcons ).

The beauty of the name "Winnipeg Falcons" is that not only does it have a Manitoba historical and natural connection, but it maintains a loose connection with the Jets via the "flying" connection.

There can only be one...

Something NEW! The Jets were a poorly-run, poorly-playing sports team. The Moose are a minor league team.

New identity all the way!

If by some twist of fate, the Jets return from Phoenix, they should definitely reclaim the name of the Jets, since it's their name. It will be a return from exile. If some other franchise comes to Winnipeg, then I think this question of Jets, Moose or something new should be taken to the fans in a referendum.

Billy Mosienko Annual Hockey Tournament

Billy Mosienko Tournament Medal
The Pride of the North End....

William (Billy) Mosienko is acknowledged as being one of the top hockey players of his era as well as being one of Manitoba's finest contributions to the N.H.L. Born in Winnipeg on Nov 2, 1921 he grew up in the Lord Selkirk area where he played the majority of his minor hockey.

In the Beginning... "The Billy Mosienko Tournament"

In 1982, Fred Sylvester, Gord Saydack, George West and David Bowles got together at Fred's cottage. While sitting on the deck, they discussed the idea of starting a tournament in North Winnipeg, which would run on an annual basis. David Bowles and George West had been involved iwth the Saint James Lions International Tournament for a number of years and possessed a lot of knowledge regarding the setup and operation of a hockey tournament.

They then had to decide on a time of the year that did not interfere with other tournaments, and also had to come up with a suitable name. As far as the time of the year was concerned, there were no other tournaments at Christmas, so it was decided that the tournament would be held annually December 27-30th.

They thought of a few names, and finally decided that they would approach Billy Mosienko to receive his blessing to use his name. Billy was a natural choice as he was a famous north end boy who had a great career in the national hockey league, and holds the record today of 3 goals in 21 seconds.

Tampa Bay Lightning announce Lecavalier, St. Louis, Stamkos and Ohlund scheduled to play in NHL Exhibition Game September 24th

True North Sports & Entertainment is pleased to announce the Tampa Bay Lightning have informed game organizers of their plans to dress star forwards Vincent Lecavalier, Martin St. Louis, Steven Stamkos, and defenceman Mattias Ohlund when they host the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL Exhibition Classic at MTS Centre on Thursday, September 24th. Gametime is 7:30 p.m.

Lecavalier and St. Louis were key members of Tampa Bay's Stanley Cup Championship team back in 2004 and each has been highly decorated for their NHL accomplishments. St. Louis is a former Hart Trophy winner as the NHL's Most Valuable Player as he became the first player since Wayne Gretzky and only the eighth in NHL history to win the Hart Trophy, the Art Ross Trophy as the league's leading scorer, and the Stanley Cup all in the same season (2004). He also played for Team Canada at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy and recently participated in the Canadian men's Olympic Hockey orientation camp in preparation for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. He was joined at the camp by Vincent Lecavalier who also played for Team Canada at the 2006 Winter Olympics. The former first overall draft choice in the 1998 NHL Draft and current captain of the Lightning. Lecavalier has appeared in three NHL All-Star Games and captured the Maurice "The Rocket" Richard Trophy as the NHL's leading goal-scorer in 2007 as well as the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 2008.

Stamkos was also selectd first overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft and followed that up by scoring 46 points in his rookie pro season to finish third in team scoring behind St. Louis and Lecavalier. Ohlund was signed as a free agent by the Lightning this past summer after a 12 year career with the Vancouver Canucks. In that time, Ohlund appeared in 770 games and scored 93 goals and 325 points to become the Canucks' all-time leading scorer amongst defencemen. Ohlund won as gold medal with Team Sweden at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy.
